Papon en route for second EP, part of his album 'The Story So Far'

MUMBAI: Papon aka Angaraag Mahanta, who is a celebrated multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer, is one of the most recognisable voices in India.

In a conversation with Radioandmusic.com, the singer stated that he is all set for his new EP, which is a part of his last album ‘The Story So Far’ which was released in November 2016.

“I’m working on my second EP, which will release in May 2017. It is an electronic solo project, though several musicians have played with me for this venture. This EP has an electronic and global vibe,” stated the soulful singer.

Four years after he released his debut Hindi album, ‘The Story So Far’, in November 2016.The album will see a staggered release over a year – broken down into three EPs. Each EP will have four songs. The first four-track EP, The Story Now EP 1 that released on 24 November 2016 on Saavn, has an organic and acoustic vibe. “There are lots of different styles and genres so I don’t know if you can classify it easily. There are thumri, reggae-rock influences, and it’s not as heavily produced. It has a nice easy and organic vibe,” Papon said.

Blessed with a voice that’s smooth and soulful at the same time, Papon, while rooted in folk, has managed to carve a niche for himself as a versatile singer and composer. He successfully juggles his roles as an indie musician and a Bollywood playback singer. A pioneer of folktronica, Papon has introduced many to the wonders of Assamese folk music traditions, seamlessly merging them with beats and bass lines.

He recently performed at the launch of MTV Beats launch bash on 4 March 2017 in Mumbai along with Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Divya Kumar among others.
