Sikh duo bags Grammy for best new age album

MUMBAI: A US-based group White Sun that is known for their musical interpretation of yogic mantras won the Grammy in the New Age category. The band comprises of Gurujas who is the vocalist along with Harijiwan who takes care of the rhythmic foundation that gives the listeners a surreal experience. The duo was discovered by two-time Emmy winner Adam Berry who is best known for his work in SouthPark. He puts in his creative inputs too for their music.

The act had pretty stiff competition in their category with names like Enya and Vangelis as other nominees but their album ‘White Sun’ managed to bag the award.

The Grammy award-winning album includes hymns from the Sikh Gurubani- Ik Ardas Waheguru, Dhan Dhan Ram Das Gur, Aap Sahaee Hoa Har Har Har, Simro Gobind, Gobinday Mukunday, Ajai Alai, Chattra Chakkra Varti, Suniai, Akal Instrumental and Hummee Hum Akal.

The duo was spotted in authentic Sikh attire along with Adam Berry flashing a sleek tuxedo at the prestigious 59th Annual Grammy Award.“We just want our music to make something better for somebody somewhere and it’s our dream to see this world become a more beautiful place. For anyone who shares that dream with us, thank you, we love you and let's do better,” she said while accepting the trophy.

The album topped the chart on iTunes in 2016. Abhiman Kaushal, who played the tabla on the album, is from Hyderabad in Telangana state in India, currently works as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
