Kailasa and Richard Bona collaboration in the pipeline?

MUMBAI: English record producer Paul Oakenfold once collaborated with Mumbai-based folk band Kailasa, and while the collaboration did not see any release, the effort surely opened the idea for more collaborations for the decade-old band.

Acclaimed composer and Grammy award nominee Bona Yayumayalolo (popularly known as Richard Bona) could possibly be the latest international musician to hit the studio with Kailash Kher’s ‘Kailasa’. Speaking about the possible collaboration to Mid Day, Kher said, “We toured the US and Canada recently for concerts. While in New York, we met popular jazz bassist Richard Bona. He told me he is a fan of our music and listens to all our songs. I was surprised to learn that he performs our hit number Teri Deewani at all his concerts. So, I proposed the plan for collaboration and he was excited about it. We discussed it briefly over dinner,"

As it turns out, Bona did perform the song live a few years ago

When Radioandmusic.com contacted Kailasa’s guitarist Paresh Kamat for more information, the guitarist replied, “The prospect sounds exciting. Surely, the two (Kailash Kher and Richard Bona) met in the States, and Bona spoke in length about the idea and our music, but that is all there is to know for now. Whether it would be an album or a single, I cannot comment on the nature of contribution. Let’s find out if we can execute this collaboration together.”

Apart from an experienced bassist, Bona is also a singer and Kamat understands that if the collaboration goes through, there’s several possibilities to how the 48-year-old Cameroon-born composer can contribute.

Let’s hope this international collaboration sees the day of light like the ‘Taka Dhoom’ featuring Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (for movie Desi Kattey), and does not turn into another disappointment as the Paul Oakenfold case.

The band will perform at NH7 Nagpur on 20 November.
