MUMBAI: For the first time in the history of Indian private FM radio, RJs from different radio stations got together to party this weekend.  The initiative was the brainchild of RJ Anmol and was executed by RJ Rohini.

The idea hit Anmol and Rohini, while they were chatting last month. Rohini soon had a Facebook group of all the Mumbai RJs. Talk of getting together floated soon enough, but materialised only on 18 June 2016. A date that will be remembered in Indian radio history.

Out of a total of 35 RJs in Mumbai, 25 made it to the party that was held at RJ Anmol's residence.  The others could not make it due to their professional commitments and personal emergencies. "The ones who missed the get together were actually feeling bad about it," said Anmol who recently tied the knot with Bollywood actress and his girlfriend of seven years Amrita Rao.

The RJ added, "We RJs are the smallest community around, but we can make a huge difference to society. Therefore, it was important for us to connect with the other."

Seconding that thought, Rohini said, "There was a need to get together and after all Mumbai had to set an example for the other cities."

The news of the RJs catching up did come as a surprise to most as the radio industry is viewed as a very competitive one. However, the coolest lot of this industry - the RJs themselves - look at it differently. "Competition is an outsider's perspective. We have never looked at it that way. We just wanted a medium to catch up. For example, the Oscars are a medium for the international stars to catch up. We do not have such an opportunity," said Rohini.

The RJs had also invited senior RJ Ameen Sayani. He could not make it to the event citing ill-health, but he did send a message to all the RJs. "It was RJ Karan Singh's idea to invite him and Ameen Saab was really happy to have been received the invitation. However he could not make it, but he emailed a letter to all the RJs. The letter included seven points of being a good radio announcer," explained Anmol.

Lastly, RJ Alleyah added, "There is so much positive energy amongst us. This has never happened before, a room full of radio presenters. This picture shows how strongly we bond as a community."

The RJs plan to keep catching up and spreading the positivity.
