Kavita Seth speaks up for Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali

MUMBAI: Recently, the media was abuzz with news regarding Ghulam Ali’s cancelled concerts in India, which came about due to opposition from political party- Shiv Sena. However, the Pakistani singer has received some sort of support from his fans, and Bollywood filmmaker- Mahesh Bhatt, who has roped in Ali to sing for his play titled ‘Milne Do’. The play narrates a love story between two culturally- crossed individuals during a time of hatred, and someone from the Indian music industry has finally spoken about the initiative.

Kavita Seth, a Ghazal and Sufi singer, believes that Bhatt’s initiative is a good sign. “Bhatt Saab is an amazing personality. I have worked with him in the past and I know that his understanding of music is outstanding. In fact, all the songs under his banner always turn out to be a hit,” said the singer.

Explaining her point of view, Seth said that musicians connect with music, and it has nothing to do with a religion or region that they belong to. In fact, the singer feels that if people continue to fight over issues like barring someone from performing because they belong to another country, there will never be a solution. This is why Bhatt’s initiative really makes her happy.

Talking in detail about Ali’s concerts being called off, she said that an artist’s job is to connect with people. Hence, he is not limited to a particular region. “Politicians should do their work; there is no need for them to get into music,” she added.

The ‘Iktara’ singer revealed that she too has sung a song for a Pakistani music producer, and is expecting it to release soon. “I have recorded a song for a Pakistani project. I happened to meet this composer, and our thoughts matched, so we recorded a song together,” stated Seth.

Seth, who looks up to Ghazal singers like Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas and Ali, added that she cannot imagine what it would be like to have her concerts cancelled at last minute, especially after putting so much work into them. Moreover, it is rather disappointing for fans who want to see us perform live. “Artists are emotional people, thus such incidents can affect us. Our job is to spread love, and that is what we do through music,” Seth said.
