I have donned a 'desi' look for the first time: Jashan Singh on 'Zakhmi'

MUMBAI: Punjabi singer and T-Series artist, Jashan Singh is a renowned name in both the Punjabi music and film industry. Having started his music career with his first single, Sai in 2015 with T-Series, this handsome singer is now all set to release his tenth Punjabi song, Zakhmi, which has grabbed eyeballs owing to its bizarre title.

Son of legendary Punjabi singer, Hardeep Singh, Jashan is also a multi-talented artist, who has not only composed but also penned songs as well as acted in a film. With Zakhmi, Jashan Singh has something exciting in store for his fans. In, an exclusive interview with Randioandmusic, the singer, whose performance on Allah Ve along with Raftaar and Manj Musik on MTV Coke Studio went PAN India, talks about Zakhmi, T-Series, Bhushan Kumar, his acting debut and much more.

Tell us about your upcoming Punjabi song, 'Zakhmi’

It is a fun, romantic dance track, contradictory to what the word Zakhmi is actually used in other context, be it a song or film. I got a line of the song from the lyrics writer of the song, Raj Kakra. He had the thought in mind that every person from India could relate to it as Zakhmi is a universal word. Every lover can sing this song to his girlfriend. Also, it is the song that every Indian can connect with. The music of the song is composed by Goldboy and video is choreographed by Robby Singh.

Any special highlight of the song, you want to talk about?

Actually, there are two key highlights of the song. First is that I will be seen dancing for the very first time with this song. And secondly, I have donned a desi look for the first time for a song, different from what I have been portraying earlier. People have seen me in urban, Sufi and western looks, but this is the first time, they will see me in a complete desi look. This was my video director Robby Singh’s idea. He also made me dance to Bhangra for the song.

‘Zakhmi’ is produced by T-Series. How has your experience been working with the music label?

It has been an incredible experience. I’m exclusively a T-Series artist and my journey with the music label started in 2015 with my first single, Sai. I want to thank Bhushanji, Neeraj Kalyan, Varun Arora and the entire team of T-Series for supporting me as an artist. They have not only guided me as an artist but also treated me as a family.

Bhushan Kumar has been quite supportive of talented singers like you.

Bhushan Kumarji has been very supportive throughout my music journey with T-Series. He has stood like a pillar and is very encouraging. Not just to me, but he has uplifted the careers of many singers and musicians. I’m fortunate that I got a chance to be associated with him.

Is T-Series the first label, you started your career with?

I started my playback singing journey with Eros. But, my full-fledged singing career, as well as independent song debut, began with T-Series.

We want to know more about your singing career and the songs you have sung so far.

I have sung many Punjabi songs with Zakhmi being my tenth single with T-Series. My earlier songs are Sai, Gilli Kurti, Chann Warga Yaar, Heel Sheel, Ik Kudi, Challa and others. I have also crooned the song, Dil De Kutte for the Punjabi film, Rangeelay, starring Jimmy Shergill. It was my debut song for Punjabi film industry.

Do you also compose music or write lyrics?

I have composed tunes for three of my 10 songs that are Chann Warga Yaar, Heel Sheel and Sai respectively. Besides, I have penned lyrics of two songs, Heel Sheel and the other is yet-to-be-released.

Have you sung Hindi songs also?

I have done two Hindi songs as of now. My first single is Maan Na Kari with T-Series. It was written by Nirmaan and the video was directed by Robby Singh. My second Hindi single is, Ik Yaad Puraani in 2017. It was a duet with Tulsi Kumar, featuring Khushali Kumar.

What are your upcoming projects, apart from Zakhmi?

I’m working on certain projects apart from Zakhmi, but I cannot talk more about it as of now. The only thing I can reveal is that my next single is a sufi song with T-Series.

We heard about you acting in Punjabi films. Tell us more about it.

I debuted last year with the Punjabi film; Dushman, which is also the debut film of Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt. It was a great experience working with Bhattji. From reading script to every other aspect, I learnt a lot from him. Also, I have sung two songs for the film. One is Challa, which I have co-sung with Sahil Solanki, Ninja and Sanj V. The second song, Zindagi Bana Laya was sung by me and Pakistani singer, Javed Bashir.

Any plans of singing for Bollywood films?

There are two songs of mine, which Bhushanji is trying to feature in Hindi films. Currently there is no confirmation that in which movie they will be used. But, yes, I’m looking forward to it as it would mark my singing debut in Hindi movies.

You have already acted in Punjabi films. Do you have any plans to act in Bollywood films also?

Definitely, I’m looking forward to it. I have got two-three scripts, but currently, I can’t talk much about it.

Who is your favourite Punjabi singer?

It is my father, Hardeep Singh, who is also a Punjabi singer.

Are you also a fan of any Bollywood singer?

Sukhwinder Singh is my favourite Bollywood singer.

Lastly, which singer according to you is your biggest competition?

Truly speaking, I believe in competing with myself only. I just want to better my work with my every performance. Besides, every singer or musician comes with their own journey. I just want to wish best for everyone.
