To Raj Kapoor with Love

The city witnessed a splendid musical night as a sign of remembrance on the death anniversary of the legendary show-man of Indian cinema - Raj Kapoor. This tribute by noted singer Babla Mehta was held at Rangsharda auditorium, Bandra on 2 June, rendering evergreen songs from different RK films in celebrated singer Mukesh's voice.

Mukesh and Raj Kapoor had a strong association that lasted for almost three decades. This bonding was displayed in a Raj Kapoor photo gallery along with his filmography before the show commenced. The evening also saw big names from the film fraternity and other celebrities such as Tanuja Chandra, who also was the guest of honour. The program was broken into two episodes, a visual short film presentation and a musical tribute. The short film by Ritu Nanda showcased some of the memorable song sequences from his films and some touching magical moments of his life. The second part of the musical night was mesmerized by Mehta crooning some of the popular numbers from Kapoor's films.

He started the evening with the melancholic number 'Asman pe hain khuda' and followed it up with other beautified pieces like 'jeena isika naam, 'awara hu, 'zinda hu istarah' which set the crowd grooving with his chants. With a couple of songs more, Mehta ended the evening with a pulsating performance from the movie 'Mera Naam Jokers Jeena yahan marna yahan. A few ardent RK fans shed a tear in the memory of the legend.

The performance kept the spirits high of one and all with the audience only craving for more. The evening was a rare treat for the fans of Mukesh, as it featured many of his golden hits. The packed auditorium was a proof that this city still has many Raj Kapoor loyalists and his films.
