MUMBAI: The music segment of YouTube undergoes a revamp, with addition of new features and a fresh layout.

The redesign will help discover new music easily by showcasing the most viewed music videos, special promotions, curated playlists, unsigned talent and giving you the ability to create on-the-fly mixes. Users can scroll down to that genre and click play' for an instant playlist.

The categories that are currently listed on the music page are religious, R&B and soul, rock, classical, world music, rap and hip-hop, country and folk, more/other, electronic and pop.

Moreover, the site consists of a section titled Events Near You... which will feature live music listings.

YouTube is using the playlist feature for playing the entire genre. Playlists will help surfers drill down in any song to see a listing of other tracks by that artist and also by other artist that might sound similar. The new music page focuses on popularity.

The site YouTube.com/music arranges all the music videos into neatly sorted categories. A section Today's hits' is a listing of the most popular music videos that have, been played on the service; and this is updated every two hours.

Localization is also a new feature to the Music home page that will pull up nearby concerts. It's location-finding technology that helps Google Map users find geo tagged YouTube videos.

YouTube hopes that the revamp successfully overcomes the shortcomings in genre selection and customization.
