MUMBAI: Veteran theatre actor Tom Alter performed a musical play 'Parchhaiyaa', a tribute to late poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, at a school.

'Parchhaiyaan', which means 'The Shadows', is a musical and dramatic exploration of the life of Ludhianvi. It is written and directed by Urdu writer Suhail Akhtar Warsi.

Tom took to the stage at Genesis Global School, a day-cum-residential education facility, to expose and inspire students to theatre and appreciation of Urdu poetry. He is a member of the advisory board of the school.

"We feel that a student should excel in all phases of education and having such a renowned actor as Mr. Tom Alter as a part of our advisory board helps motivate and create excitement in the minds of students towards theatre," Pramod Sharma, principal, Genesis Global School, said in a statement.

Ludhianvi, a legendary poet associated with Bollywood's golden era, penned hundreds of popular songs, ghazals, nazms and speeches in all time classics like 'Naya Daur', 'Laila Majnu' and 'Daag'.

Ludhianvi was a popular Urdu poet and Hindi lyricist, who worked extensively in Hindi films. He won the Filmfare Award twice (in 1964 and 1977), and in 1971 was awarded the Padma Shri. His final works were released for the Hindi film Lakshmi (1982).
