The Supersonics to play at NH7, Ziro Festival and The New Wave Festival
MUMBAI: When the band got back together in 2012, The Supersonics created a buzz in the independent music scene. Since then, they have worked on their latest album 'Heads Up' relentlessly and produced a hit of an album in their true sound. The band talked to Radioandmusic.com about the album and their upcoming gigs.
The Supersonics, originally from Kolkata, launched their album Heads Up on 14 August in blueFROG, which was a huge success with people cheering on till the end of night. Their album has been well received and merchandise during the launch got sold out in a matter of hours. The four piece group is popular for creating catchy and groovy rock and roll songs. The band boasts an extremely fresh sound, injects the listener with a shot of energy and sends them back to the 60s. Rock and roll was big then and anyone who listens to their music will agree that they remind them of The Beatles as well as The Rolling Stones.
The album has been funded by Red Bull, a brand that has been promoting independent art, especially music, for a while now. It also has an extremely different sound from their debut album 'Maby Baking' which was released under the label of HMV (now Saregama) in 2009. Ananda 'Munshi' Sen, vocalist and guitarist of the band, says, "Red Bull has been really supportive and helpful. All our physical copies of the album got sold out at the launch and that is great. We wanted the physical copies to be a sort of a keepsake. That is why we have made it look cool, with the artwork, the lyrics and everything."
Avinash Chordia, drummer of the group says, "Red Bull has done so much for us without asking for anything in return. We have been very lucky this time."
Through Red Bull, the band will also release a three part video series, one of which was released on 20 August about their producer Miti Adhikari. Adhikari has in the past worked with major artistes and bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, Foo Fighters and many more. The other two videos will be about the band and their album.
When asked about why 'Into the Dark' was chosen as a single from the track list, Sen said, "Our sound has changed a lot since 'Maby Baking'. From among all our songs of Heads Up, 'Into the Dark' is probably the closest to what we were. So, we released it first to let the listeners and fans warm in to our new sound."
He added, "Bands evolve gradually and we have matured. This time we have focused only on rock and roll which is the genre we are all influenced by."
After breaking up for a while and patching up again, fans are still skeptical about whether they will disband. Chordia said, "I do not know why everyone asks if we might break up. We hope not. Music is a priority for now. Instead of getting stressed about the things that do not work out, we will find a way around to sort things this time."
The band members' influences range across different genres like pop, blues, funk, rock and roll and classic rock including lyrical influences from Bob Dylan. Chordia says, "We also really like Grateful Dead and add elements from their music which are not very obvious."
The Supersonics will also be releasing individual music videos for all their ten tracks. They are already in the process of shooting one which will be out soon via their Youtube channel and possibly other platforms as well. The band has a busy gig schedule lined up for the rest of the year. They will be playing at NH7 Weekender at the Bangalore and Delhi editions of the festival in November. The band revealed that they will also be performing at The Ziro festival in Arunachal Pradesh, which is in September and The New Wave Festival in Goa in November.
