Taylor Swift grabs five trophies at AMA, MJ wins four

MUMBAI: Taylor Swift took home five awards, including Artist of the Year, at the 37th American Music Awards that were held on 22 November.

During the three-hour live show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Shakira, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Green Day and Adam Lambert all took the stage.

Swift also won the favourite female artist award in the pop/rock and country categories, and she was named favorite adult contemporary artist in a field that included Daughtry and Jason Mraz. Her album 'Fearless' was voted favorite country album.

The singer had also won four awards at the Country Music Awards which were held ealier this month.

When Swift accepted the favorite female country artist award, she said, "I want to say thank you to country radio for giving fans a chance to hear my music. Thank you to everybody who came out to see my Fearless tour this summer and this year. Thank you to everybody who follows me on Twitter and goes to my Web site and fan sites. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This means the world to me."

The other artist of the year nominees were Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga, Eminem and the late Michael Jackson.

Gloriana received the breakthrough artist of the year award which was voted by fans via cell phone in the category sponsored by T-Mobile. The other contenders were Lady Gaga, Keri Hilson and Kid Cudi.

Michael Jackson won in the Favourite Male Artist Soul/R&B and Favourite Male Artist Pop/Rock categories among his four wins for the night. His 2003 greatest-hits album, "Number Ones," also won favorite album in both categories, bringing his career AMA total to 23, making him the most honored artist in AMA history. Wearing a single sparkling glove, his brother Jermaine accepted each award, stressing that his late brother's message was just as important as his music. "The message that Michael
had will live on forever," he said. "He saw good in everyone and he wanted everyone to do good. He always started with love."

In the country category, Keith Urban was named favorite male artist, and Rascal Flatts received their fourth consecutive award as favorite band, duo or group.

Whitney Houston was honored with the International Artist of the Year award, joining only six other winners — such as Michael Jackson — in the history of the AMAs.

The Black Eyed Peas were voted favorite pop/rock band and they energized the crowd when they performed two of the year's most popular hits, "I Got A Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow." Other winners included Jay-Z, wife Beyonce and Rascal Flatts.
