MUMBAI: Playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan is planning to work on a solo album that will channelize her inner cravings for self expressions despite acknowledging the fact that Indi-pop market is non-existent.

“There was a time when singers like Alisha Chinai and Baba Sehgal were in the scene but that just vanished. Non-film music is non- existent now but I would love to do an independent album though I have very little time. Maybe I’ll start with composing tunes – ghazal and Sufi music are on my mind. If I get the time, maybe the project will take shape in 2013,” she told Radioandmusic.com. One thing she is sure of is that she wants to ‘create’ her own material for the album.

The industry which has given her fame-Bollywood- has proved too powerful for the country’s fledgling pop culture. The film industry’s music juggernaut has not just taken over the country but is moving beyond the country and going global. Ironically, the film industry is in the process of tapping into the country’s Indie artists- from within and without- for fresh and new sounds.

“Take Global Indian Music Awards (GIMA) - it’s at par with the Grammy’s as far as Indian music industry goes. It is one platform that gives an opportunity for struggling artists to make their mark. It even treats little-known artists like stars and makes them look glamourous,” she added.

Chauhan, who is also a part of the MTV Unplugged Season 2, however has no plans to undergo an image makeover for the show.

“I have no plans for a makeover - I’ll just go with the flow. I love singing live in front of people. My song list for the show may be Bollywood but it will be rendered in a non-filmy way. Lesser known tracks like ‘Le Chale’ (from film ‘My Brother Nikhil’) and a song by Philip Anurban will also be there. Maybe I’ll also sing an English song,” she said.
