Singers to compete on NDTV Imagine`s Dhoom Macha De

MUMBAI:Vocalists in the Indian music industry have probably never had it so good. After appearing as mentors, judges and hosts on television shows as varied as Zee`s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge and Star One`s Bol Baby Bol and Sahara`s Jjhoom India, they are getting ready to compete with each other on another new show on upcoming channel NDTV Imagine.

A new bi weekly one hour music show titled Dhoom Macha De will go on air on the Karan Johar backed NDTV Imagine, with 11 wellknown singers testing their vocal chords against each other. Participants roped in thus far include Anaida, Baba Sehgal, Babul Supriyo, Devang Patel, Jaspinder Nirula, Jassi, Kamaal Khan, Richa Sharma, Sapna Awasthi, Suneeta Rao and Taz.

Adman and lyricist Prasoon Joshi and Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio have been roped in as judges, it is learnt. Malaika Arora Khan, who judged Nach Baliye, will host the new show.

Sol, the production house that has been producing Nach Baliye, has been commissioned to produce the show. The set designs are currently getting finalised and shoots are expected to start by January 2008, say sources.

The show aims to find the country`s `best live performer` through performances that will range from Folk, Pop, Reggae, Rap, and Bollywood. The singers, most of whom have had their share of the limelight some years ago, will perform their best hit numbers. Practically, every mainstream channel now has a show with celebrity singers as their mainstay. While Zee continues its Sa Re Ga Ma Pa series with Sonu Nigam and Suresh Wadkar as judges, Star One`s Bol Baby Bol has roped in Adnan Sami to host the proceedings. Sahara One`s Jjhoom India has been facing teething problems with one of the mentor singers Zubeen Garg leaving the show midway for a prior commitment and another, Vinod Rathod taking ill, necessitating the appearance of Lucky Ali in its latest episode. Star Plus` Voice of India, with host Shaan and judges including Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet is inching towards its climax.

New entrant 9X too has announced an Endemol production Mission Ustad that has roped in A R Rahman into its fold.

Television channels seem ready to sing all the way to the bank.
