Sanam Puri: Back then, every note was important

MUMBAI: Sanam Puri is on a roll these days. After delivering a couple of hits like 'Dhat Teri Ki Main' from 'Gori Tere Pyar Mein' last year, his success has extended to 'Ishq Bulava' from the film 'Hasee Toh Phasee' this year. With this the singer is juggling with both, Bollywood and independent projects. Recently he sang the song 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh' from the film '1942: A Love Story', which was originally sung by Kumar Sanu. It was the label company Saregama, who approached the SANAM band to redub the song.

Talking about how the label company approached the band, Puri said, "We as a band sung 'Lag Ja Gale Se' from the film 'Woh Kaun Thi'. Saregama was not even in the picture at the time, and we had put it on Youtube. It was then that they approached us saying that they were trying to do something like this and thus the single happened." Puri will be rendering his vocals for tracks that are dated before the year 2000.

So how does he feel singing songs which he grew up listening to? He replied, "It is wonderful and it was almost like I am reliving the era. Then, the composers and singers gave a lot of importance to melodies. Every note, every word was important, which is why we had so many soulful numbers."

SANAM, the band, which in the past was also known as SQS, will also be coming up with a lot of original tracks for their independent album. "People will hear us more often now, since we are working and shooting a lot of singles and have been travelling a lot," explained Puri. The best part about the band is that equal importance is given to each and every member. "Of course, each of us works hard to put out a single and it is unfair for any one member to hog the limelight as it is team effort," he elaborated.
