Kavita Seth debuts in Hollywood with Michael Winterbottom#039s #039Trishna#039

MUMBAI: Well-known for her Sufi tracks in music industry, eminent playback singer Kavita Seth is all set to make her mark in Hollywood with Michael Winterbottom directed British drama movie ‘Trishna’.

The singer will render three tracks for the movie to be produced by acclaimed music composer Amit Trivedi. The tracks will be based on the folk rock genre outfitting the earthy flavour of the movie. Apart from Seth, the film also features vocal talent of another Sufi sensation Richa Sharma.

Speaking about the tracks, Seth says, “The movie is set in contemporary Rajasthan and the tracks depict the earthy flavour of the movie through their folk genre. It portrays the story of a woman whose life is entangled in a combination of love and circumstances.”

‘Trishna’ is Winterbottom’s adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, set in present-day India. Trishna (Frieda Pinto), a beautiful and spirited young women who is suddenly forced to assume responsibility for supporting her family, takes a job in a faraway hotel owned by Jay (Riz Ahmed), a wealthy, handsome Brit of Indian heritage. He spots her, woos her and wins her heart. But as the first rush of romance settles into commitment, Jay demands that Trishna relinquish her free spirit and assume the role of the traditional subservient wife.

After the success of her spiritual album ‘OM,’ Seth is looking forward to release yet another spiritual album. The untitled album will be released through Universal Music by September this year. “This album is the most treasured project of my career. I have been working on this project for past three to four years. I always look forward to incorporate and work on poetries, this album will also include some poetical works as well as few qualaams,” Seth shares.

The Sufi singer, who aims to introduce her genre all round the globe is quite pleased with on-going musical shows like Unplugged, Coke Studio and Roots. She is happy that instead of just being a part of bollywood, Sufi music is gaining its own identity due to these shows. “India is rich in culture and classical music is the base of any music that has ever been produced. Sufi and classical music has stayed in the base of bollywood as well.  Shows like Coke studio, Unplugged and Roots etc have given this musical genre its own identity. It’s really great that the shows are propagating this music,” she states. 

Seth is also performing at the live concert ‘Boondon Ka Paigham’, an annual series of classical music nights featuring prominent names from the industry. Organised by Cisne For Arts, in association with Birla A1, Butta Hospitality,Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, the first edition will be held on 12 July in Hyderabad. The concert will also feature performance of renowned ghazal vocalist Jaswinder Singh. Commenting on the concert, Seth said, “The concert is a celebration of monsoon season, it aims to welcome the season in a very spiritual way. The concert will feature several prominent and upcoming classical artistes. Classical never had its respected reach of followers, but today with the help of digital media, classical music is reaching youngsters. It is gaining its most deserved place and through such concerts we are just trying our best to popularize the genre within youngsters.”

Apart from regular concerts and albums, the Sufi singer is also working on several Bollywood projects.
