MUMBAI: Apple`s iPhone has benefitted Mac sales.

With only a couple of months of iPhone sales, the Mac operating system has shown a sudden gain in market share.

The combined market share of the Mac OS on both Power PCs and the Intel platforms has hovered around six per cent most of 2007. But in September, the combined market share jumps significantly to 6.6 per cent, says US based Net Applications.

Microsoft Vista`s market share gain has been better than expected since its introduction. But, it appears that Apple`s hopes that popular iPhones like iPods before it would lead to increased Mac sales are coming to fruition.

Apple had stated bluntly that their hopes and expectations were for the popularity of the iPhone to have a similar impact on Mac sales that the iPod has had. And, it seems that they were right, says the Net Applications study. So, while Vista heads toward OS dominance in the future, the Mac is not only holding its own, but actually making nice gains in market share. Apparently, thanks to the iPhone.
