GIMA Awards 2012 announces non-film music nominations

MUMBAI: The third edition of the Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) Awards has announced the nominations in its non-film music category.

A total of 12 awards have been announced in the non-film music category including Best Music Debut, Best Pop Album, Best Rock Album, Best Pop/Rock Single, Best Devotional Album, Best Ghazal Album, Best Folk Album, Best Fusion Album, Best Hindustani Classical Album (Vocal & Instrumental), Best Carnatic Classical Album (Vocal & Instrumental).

Shankar Mahadevan’s son Shivam has been nominated in the Best Music Debut category along with music director Gulraj Singh for the album ‘Ganaraj Adhiraj’, while Agnee leads the nominations in the Best Pop/Rock Single category  with three songs ‘Hello Andheron’, ‘I Believe’, and ‘Manmani’.

Music maestro AR Rahman has been nominated for two albums in the Best Fusion Album category, legendary Pt Jasraj has also received two nominations in the Hindustani Classical category and Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia has bagged a nod in the Hindustani Instrumental category.

The big contenders in the Best Pop Album include ‘Coke studio’, ‘Rangeele’ by Kailash Kher and ‘Story so Far’ by Papon. Euphoria’s album ‘Item’ along with Advaita’s ‘The Silent Sea’ and Sky Rabbit’s ‘Sky Rabbit’ will battle it out for the Best Rock Album.

The other big contenders in Best Carnatic Classical album include music veteran Dr L Subramaniam for his album ‘Innovations’ and Ganesh Kumaresh for ‘Ragapravaham’.

Late singer Jagjit Singh has received two nominations for Best Devotional Album for ‘Nivedan’ and ‘Shri Krishna Sankirtan’.

GIMA advisory board member Javed Akhtar said, “Today, GIMA has evolved into a major platform for the Indian Music Industry that brings together the entire fraternity to honour and celebrate musical talent across various genres. This year, there is an interesting mix of nominees and I congratulate GIMA as they embark upon yet another musical journey.”

Recognizing and celebrating the talent of music veterans and stalwarts of Indian music, the nominees were selected by a jury panel of over 30 eminent members from the music and film industry and later presented to the GIMA Academy for the final voting. The jury panel this year comprised of renowned artistes including Anup Jalota, Dr L Subramaniam, Ehsaan Noorani, Hariharan, Ila Arun, Lesle Lewis, Loy Mendonsa, Pankaj Udhas, Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Raju Singh, Ram Sampath, Roop Kumar Rathod, Salim Merchant, Shantanu Moitra, Suresh Wadkar, Swanand Kirkire, Taufiq Qureshi, Shashi Vyas, Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Rashid Khan.

The academy comprises of over 300 members from the fraternity encompassing industry stalwarts, music directors, producers, lyricists, singers, technicians, composers and leaders in the music business.
