RJ Sayema: Purani Jeans has become a hub for the listeners

RJ Sayema the award winning host of Radio Mirchi Delhi's longest running retro show Purani Jeans,' has brought an exciting combination of listeners passion and battle on-air through Purani Jeans new segment Superstars ki Jung'. The host converse about the new content and the evolvement of Purani Jeans with Radioandmusic.com's Swagata Panjari.

How has Purani Jeans evolved over the years?

The show has evolved tremendously, Purani Jeans began as a tribute to Bollywood's golden era and today due to listeners' active participation and support, it has transformed into a comfort zone where one can relax after a long tiring day. The show aptly signifies the slogan 'Sing the life away.'

Which new segments are introduced in the show?

Purani Jeans has initiated various new segments like Purani Jeans Film festival' where evergreen movies are exhibited on the big screen. Recently, the show has started a new initiative Superstars Ki jung' for fans who will get an opportunity to display affection for their favorite artistes.

Tell us more about the campaign Superstars ki Jung'?

Superstars Ki Jung contest is not a battle between the two superstars, it is a test of fans passion and compassion for their beloved artistes. The contestants have to battle it out to make their favorite artist win the contest.

The campaign will be subsequently aired on other Mirchi stations also. For example, contestants have to pick their artist amid musical gods such as Mohd Rafi vs. Kishore Kumar, evergreen Lata Mangeshkar vs. the legendary Asha Bhonsle and many more.

What kind of response is generated by Purani Jeans over the years?

The response is great, infact Purani Jeans has become a hub for the listeners, they are much more relaxed and in the mood to participate after a long day. The participants belongs from all age group and I feel the show suits its name, Bollywood's golden era is truly like a purani jeans which you never want to discard.

Do you think radio jocks should be regulated for what they speak on-air?

According to me, Radio Jockey should act responsibly on-air and should be careful with the language, especially words that he or she uses as they are addressing lakhs of listeners. I have always followed the guide lines and I don't believe in uttering abuses or slang on-air.

What do you think is the future of radio sector with the onset of Phase-III?

With Phase-III around, radio sector is surely going to witness another boom. Private FM has already succeeded in bringing a revolution in the radio sector and Phase-III will be an addition to that revolution.

Share a memorable moment of Purani Jeans?

A very interesting incident happened with me; it was when Purani Jeans started an initiative for under-privileged where we would collect Purani jeans from listeners. I got a call from a lady leaving in Delhi; she told me that she had collected 400 pairs of jeans all on her own. We were truly impressed with her and as gratitude I personally went to her house to collect them. When we reached and asked for the collected jeans, she handed me envelop where she had written her favourite old songs and said, These are the Purani jeans that I have collected. We call all our old songs Purani jeans na!...
