Power 107.8 FM downs shutters in Kolkata

MUMBAI: One of the nine functioning private FM radio stations in Kolkata, Power 107.8 FM has stopped broadcast from 21 April 2016.

Power programming head Roopsha Dasgupta confirmed to Radioandmusic.com that the station had downed shutters. The station, that played contemporary hits, had launched in 2003 and was targeted at the under 30 audience.

There was a time when Power FM used to play mostly new Bollywood music and popular English numbers. According to listeners however, the station's apathetic approach towards non film music and musicians caused loss of interest in the station. In the latest RAM ratings dated 15 April 2016, Power FM ranked the lowest in Kolkata with a listenership share of 3.2 per cent among the nine active stations of the city, with Radio Mirchi leading the pack.

Power FM general manager Gautam Bose refused to elaborate on the closure of the station, apart from saying that there have been some legal issues.

When it launched, the station had a good mix of experienced RJs and well known personalities, with the jockeys being selected from auditions at various locations in Kolkata during a talent hunt dubbed 'Star Power.'
