All India Radio reaches about 92 per cent of area and 99 per cent of population

NEW DELHI: A survey by All India Radio has found that present Day Time (MW+FM) AIR coverage is about 92  per cent by area and 99.2 per cent by population, of which FM AIR coverage is only about 32 per cent by area and 44.5 per cent by population.

Prasar Bharati sources told Radioandmusic.com that All India Radio Broadcasting Stations are currently functional at 414 locations throughout the country.

 As far as AIR is concerned, 231 more transmitters (115 Continuing Scheme + 116 New Scheme) under 12th Plan are being established in the country, including in rural areas.

Reception surveys and subjective listening surveys for all AIR transmitters are being carried out from time to time to ascertain technical quality and coverage areas of programme being received.

However, 21 radio channels of AIR are available on Doordarshan's DTH platform in Ku-band (DD Freedish) and can be received throughout the country, including uncovered areas.  

According to the previous survey carried out by AIR, the national average number of AIR listeners on a specific day is 460 million. The sample survey was conducted from 2011 till 2014 for various channels, which showed that the number of listeners was 142 million. These channels included primary channel- Vividh Bharati, AIR FM Rainbow and AIR FM Gold in various states and union territories.
