Universal Music's 'Fifty Shades of Grey' soundtrack certified gold in the United States

MUMBAI: The chart-topping and critically acclaimed 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Republic Records) has officially earned a Gold certification by the RIAA for physical and digital sales in excess of 500,000. The album is also seeing incredible global success, reaching Platinum status in France, Poland, Russia and Greece and Gold in the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, Ireland, Austria, Turkey and Taiwan.

In addition, the soundtrack has reached number one on iTunes in sold over 90 countries and has amassed 2.5 million album equivalent sales worldwide in just seven weeks. The companion album to the Universal Pictures and Focus Features blockbuster, which has brought in nearly 600 million dollars at the global box office since its mid-February release, has solidified itself as the hottest soundtrack of 2015.

In addition to the Gold certification in the US, two tracks from the soundtrack The Weeknd's 'Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)' and Ellie Goulding's 'Love Me Like You Do' have reached platinum certification. 'Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)' also reached number one on Spotify this past week. Just recently, it became the '#1 Most Shazamed Song in the World', being Shazamed over 2.3 million times and occupying the Top 5 on the music discovery app for five weeks straight.   

With 'Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)', The Weekend grabs his second Hot 100 top 10 and first solo as 'Love Me Harder,' with Ariana Grande, reached number seven in November. The international story is also impressive with 'Earned It' certified Platinum in Canada, Sweden, Norway and Holland and Gold in Australia, New Zealand and Denmark while also hitting the Top 5 on iTunes in 68 markets including 35 number one's. In the UK, it was in the Top 5 at the Official Singles Chart for three consecutive weeks and it has been holding the number one spot on the Shazam chart for six consecutive weeks. The video for the single is a theatrical event in its own right having been directed by 'Fifty Shades of Grey' director Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring the film's lead actress Dakota Johnson. Since its release two months ago, it has amassed over 70 million views.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the bestselling book that has become a global phenomenon.  Since its release, the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy has been translated into 52 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.
