While the royalty issue still hangs fire and bad news (Worldspace India shutting shop) did mar the rosy outlook, there's much to look forward to.

MUMBAI: Ustad Amjad Ali Khan may have been the unfortunate victim of an indifferent airline's mismanagement of luggage, but he's definitely not alone.

His misadventure, in fact, finds resonance among several in the music fraternity who travel by air for concerts and performances.

Worldspace listeners want music to play on

MUMBAI: The news of Worldspace Radio shutting down has shocked its subscribers in India, a country that housed 95 per cent of its subscription base. Music lovers are aggrieved at the abrupt termination of the music service from 31 December.

It is the loss of music that the users are upset about most, over the monetary damages they will have to bear.

Says a Worldspace regular, "It was the only thing that kept the music alive to the best of quality and diversity. It really feels strange and profoundly sad to refer to Worldspace in the past tense."

Mergers and consolidations - new mantra for FM stations

MUMBAI: Is there light at the end of the tunnel for the struggling private FM radio industry in India in the form of mergers and consolidations?

The solution, that appears to be playing on the minds of several FM players might just reignite the radio industry by bringing the medium on the national advertising map but opinions are mixed about the effects of this trend on the industry.

When the Jazz goes down

MUMBAI: With artistes like Wayne Krantz, Beatle Jazz, and an open air venue like the Priyadarshini Park – Mumbai's jazz music lovers couldn’t have asked for more.

The 100 Pipers Jazz Utsav 2009 however wasn't destined to happen the way it was planned. But just when things were looking up for one of the best ‘Jazz’ music festivals in India that had to be called off last year, they took a bad turn in the unpredictable city that is Mumbai.

Call 'em for the music

MUMBAI: They are the ones that create the music we keep playing on our phones and ipods. It's their tunes that make their way into a million cell phones as ring tones and caller ring back tones.

Ever wonder what the singers, composers and lyricists from the sprawling music industry in India think about that biggest revenue generator on the horizon - the CRBT? Ever wonder if they themselves subscribe to the service, and hey, do they play their own compositions?
