'Rahman will collect Oscars like Filmfare trophies' - Resul Pookutty
MUMBAI: When it comes to music, 2010 has started on a good note for sure.
A R Rahman's track from Couples' Retreat 'Na Na..' has already been nominated for this year's Academy Awards For those who may have forgotten, Slumdog Millionaire's now famous track 'Jai Ho' is also nominated at this year's Grammy Awards.
Rahman's friend and Oscar winner Resul Pookutty is escatic about Rahman's nominations, but more than anything else, the Kerala born sound techinician is confident that this year too, Rahman will reign.
One of the reasons why 'Jai Ho' will score over others is because there hasn't been any other track like 'Jai Ho' on an international level, says Pookutty. "This is one of the first original motion picture songs that is being celebrated on such a large scale internationally - no other motion picture soundtrack has done that in the past.. that gives me the confidence that Rahman will bag the Grammys in this category for sure - there's no doubt he'll pick up the Grammy."
Moving to Rahman's Oscar nomination for Couples' Retreat, Pookutty says the west is already grooving to the Tamil songs on Couples' Retreat. "His music is transcending all the language and cultural barriers particularly because "Rahman has introduced 'language' as 'sound'," he reasons.
In the past couple of years, Rahman has been the only musician giving music that has resonated with the masses at some level and Pookutty too resonates with the same sentiment "When I hear Rahman's music, I feel I have heard his music somewhere - it has a quality of triggering a nostalgia at one level," he adds, saying that even when he works on a masala movie with a big star, Rahman brings in an element of sufism and spirituality
Pookutty says that the West is in a way discovering Rahman's music, "but one of the reasons why I really feel proud of being associated with Rahman is beacause he has taught us Indians how to love and respect other traditions - he goes beyond in bringing together sounds from various cultures, and I am sure he is going to bring home the Oscars like he collects Filmfares - he's going to make the entire country proud," he adds.

Nahas, I did watch the film black not on DVD but in theatres. The sound track of that film is just as good as any dubbed Hindi film. Most of the track is covered with a strange noise that Amitabh makes like most Hindi films dubbed or sync black lacks the use of ambiance. Black is not a great example of brilliant sound. The spin after winning an Oscar- Pookutty started making strange statements like going to Bahamas after the movie Blue is finished so that he could obtain the underwater sound. Anyone who knows about underwater sound will tell you that the sound recorded in Mali ,Mandapam or Mumbai Sea will not be any different from the sea in Bahamas. Another spin I read was for the Malayalam flick which was shot without sound Pookutty went to the location with extras after the movie finished shooting to recreate the sounds. Since film is shot non sync what difference would this have made if the sound is created in studio with folly artist.
@shalini , shalini u must make one more comment after watch the movie black(sanjay leela bhansali), in that movie u will find who is resul and what is his creativity...pls use master dvd for watch movies, its a request ..
Pookutty is right when he says "When I hear Rahman's music, I feel I have heard his music somewhere" Because A R rahman copies music from western artist and masks it with various other noises. His music from Blues CHIGGY WIGGY, is copied from an R Kelly song, the list of A R Rahman copying music is far too long to quote here.To me any artist who steals from another and takes credit for it is no better that a common thief... Shame and he didnt deserve the Oscar.
If pookutty think he and Rahman got their Oscar for their creativity .. they are nuts both Oscars were accidental and a big mistake. If you want proof just listen to pookutty,s sound in Blue... bubbles and more bubbles...he should have listen to the sound track of movies like the deep before attempting this. His Mallu flick with an Hairy Mamotty has only sounds of swords no other ambiance. Rahmans music in slum dog was rubbish and his music of Couples retreat is copied from various rap artist..... By the way I read Pookutty now goes around with body guards and I am sure he must be first sound recrdist on film locations with body guard... Pookutty and Rahman please stop spinning the Oscar you guys are just average.
