A superhero film demands an orchestral score û Atif Afzal

MUMBAI: Music director of 2013's 'Prague'- Atif Afzal has been roped in to provide the original score as well as to curate the soundtrack for his second Marathi film 'Baji'. The film is an action-adventure-romance laced superhero vigilante film that transcends both folklore and present day. Afzal spoke exclusively to Radioandmusic.com about his composition for the upcoming film.

The music for 'Baji' has been recorded in Dolby Atmos; which makes 'Baji' the first Marathi film to use this updated technology for its music. "Recording in [Dolby] Atmos takes the sound to the next level. There are many speakers producing a variety of sounds accurately which makes you feel like you are in the midst of all the action. While recording with Dolby 5.1, you were restricted to 5 speakers; however in this case, these restrictions do not exist. The Atmos speakers are present all around, which multiplies the dimension of the sound," said Afzal.

The first scene in the trailer of the film features the sounds of the Indian music instrument 'Shankha' blend together with the sounds of horns, trombones and various other orchestrated music. "Since the film is a superhero film, the music of the film will be just as large as the film. While I have used simple sounds, most of the score will be heavily orchestrated."

According to Afzal, the writers, executive producers and music crew work as a team while composing for Baji. "We work as a team and often have jam sessions. While cracking the score or the songs for the film, the task is arduous to say the least, but we work as a team and find a solution."

Afzal is looking at six or seven potential songs for the soundtrack. On a larger scale, in reference to the orchestral setting, not only has Afzal made the sound of the film larger, but he has also fused the classical Indian sounds, and that is clearly evident from the trailer of the film.

Towards the end of the film's trailer, one can hear female vocals, which Afzal says belongs to 'Chinmay'. Howbeit, Afzal remained tight lipped on not only the other artistes featured on the soundtrack, but also his upcoming projects. Afzal did say that his next venture would be a Hindi film.

On Friday, 1 August, DAR Motion Pictures released the first look trailer of their upcoming film, 'Baji'. It is based on the legend of a man, 'Baji', played by Shreyas Talpade who took upon himself to protect the common man against oppression and injustice. Baji is defined by his sword, his bow-arrow and his white stallion. The film stars Amruta Khanvilkar as Baji's love interest and Jitendra Joshi as the main antagonist. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on 6 February, 2015.
