Kappa TV's 'Music Mojo' gets ready for next season

MUMBAI: Kappa TV, which introduced the show 'Music Mojo' last February will be wrapping up its second season by April. The show which airs fresh content on Saturday and Sunday at 9pm is a platform for many new talented artistes and will begin its new season in May 2014.

The next season will have a new look and feel, but at the same time it will be subtle. The show production in-charge Sujith Unnitha who has been working closely with artistes said, "We are not looking at very heavy lighting based shooting for the show. We are just looking at minimal changes in the next season. We are keen on good music and simple sets. Most of the channels have plenty of lights hanging around the set and we are determined not to have all of that. We want the show to be subtle and earthy, instead of being flowery."

For the new season, Leslie Lewis, Lucky Ali and Sunitha Sarathy will be appearing on the show. The budget has more or less remained the same, but according to Unnitha it is not of concern. "Our platform is not to get on board big names but to help talents make it big. These artistes want to showcase their talent and if it is in our budget we go forward with it. Otherwise we tell them what we can offer. We do not believe in negotiations, as this platform is not for big artistes to perform but to help new artistes."

The show is not for vocalists alone, but gives equal importance to various musicians who play in a band.

'Music Mojo' has gained lot of popularity and goodwill among musicians based in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The show is particularly accepted among the South Indian audience.

The show is the brainchild of Sumesh Lal who is also the director of the show and consultant for Kappa TV and other channels. The concept was introduced seven years ago, but was aired only during festive seasons like Christmas, Easter and Onam. Unnitha said, "We wanted to create a platform for Independent music. There is a lot of talent in South India. When everyone tried to enter into reality show based format, we decided to give musicians a space where they could experiment with music. We decided to have original content but then there were lots of covers as well."

Both, Unnitha and Lal, listen to one or two songs by the artistes and then decide which band or musician to feature on the show. But the final call is taken by Lal. Unnitha stressed, "Within two months of the show going live, we had got many musicians approaching us to become part of the show."

70 episodes have been aired so far and the show had over 700-800 fresh songs. It has featured 70 bands and more than 400-500 musicians till date.

The show has been growing on social media as well. Their YouTube Channel has a viewership of more than 10 million and is getting decent traffic as they regularly update the content on the channel. Unnitha added that while getting feedback on TV is impossible, it can be done on YouTube, which helps improve the show. The platform prefers featuring new vocalists, but will at times bend the rules depending on the demand from viewers.
