India's first YouTube Fanfest, energy and inexorable screams

MUMBAI: India played witness to its first ever Youtube fanfest on Saturday, 1 March at the Bandra Amphitheatre. The YouTube FanFest in association with Hewlett Packard (HP) was an exclusive live show with the best of Youtube's hall of fame, thrilling behind the scenes and brand new talents.

Amongst the Youtube sensations present were, All India Bakchod (AIB), an up and coming group of stand up comedians gaining tremendous popularity, who were also the hosts for the evening. Joining them were Youtube musical sensations like 88KeysToEuphoria, Maati Baani, Shraddha Sharma and Shankar Tucker. Along with musicians, fashionistas like Bethany Mota and Scherezade "Sherry" Shroff were also present at the fest.

Kicking off the event was the independent band, Maati Baani, a world music band combining elements of Hindustani classical with Folk music and new age sounds. Lead Vocalist, Nirali Kartik, showed her strong pipes with Tore Matware Naina, one of their most viewed videos on Youtube.

Music lead to comedy in the form of The Viral Fever, India's first organized online TV with regular series aimed at the youth poking fun at the current affairs and politics of India. TVF presented their signature Qtiyaapa segment, Bollywood Aam Aadmi with a mock conversation between Arnab Goswami and Arjun Kejriwal. The segment ended with Arnab challenging Kejriwal to a Kabbadi duel. The TVF segment was briefly interrupted by Shah Rukh Khan making a short appearance. However, Khan quickly moved past after apologizing to TVF.

The next performer was Scherezade Shroff, model with her own new YouTube channel where you can find fashion & beauty videos, makeup & hair tutorials, DIY's and lots of other fun videos. Shroff presented her audiences with a 3 Minute Make-up Challenge, allowing members of AIB to compete with her to hilarious outcome.

Internet sensation IISuperwomanII was mobbed by the audience members in spite of guards obstructing the stage. IISuperwomanII, a younger, rebellious Punjabi version of Tina Fey, has made records over YouTube with her channel boasting well over 2 million subscribers. Towards the end of the evening, Superwoman proved to be more popular than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Khan was on the stage with AIB when IISuperwomanII slowly walks from behind following uproar of applause from the crowd sidelining Khan's presence almost completely and immediately.

Shraddha Sharma, 17 year old Youtube cover artist now being signed on by Universal Music premiered her music video following a peppy dance number.

The next segment had almost the same audience response as IISuperwomanII. Bethany Mota, known by her YouTube username MacBarbie07, is an American beauty guru, vlogger and YouTube celebrity. As of January 2014, Bethany Mota's YouTube channel, MacBarbie07, has over 4.8 million subscribers and over 372 million video views.

The following performer experienced more than a few technical glitches. Vsauce comprises a number of YouTube channels created by Internet personality Michael Stevens. The channels are known for producing videos relating to various scientific topics, as well as gaming, technology, culture, and other topics of general interest. While at the event, Stevens, well known for weird questions surrounding the world like, What does human flesh taste like?, What is the colour of the mirror? etc., managed to create the world's largest human wave starting from the Youtube Fanfest.

The last two acts of the evening started with 88KeysToEuphoria, a channel started by Aakash Gandhi with piano and instrumental covers of popular Bollywood songs. It has now grown to become one of the most recognized brands on YouTube dedicated to acoustic Bollywood music with Jonita Gandhi. The group gave a sneak peek of their new youtube video that is a mash up between classic Bollywood songs like Suhaani Raat and Chaudvin Ka Chand.

The Youtube Fanfest ended with Shankar Tucker, who rose to fame with the popularity of his online music series called "The ShrutiBox". The Shrutibox features his compositions and was released online on platforms like YouTube and Soundcloud. Tucker along with Vidya Iyer performed one of their most viewed songs, Nee Nenaindal.

The entire line up of the artists along with hosts AIB and Shah Rukh Khan concluded the fest with the ensemble assembling on the stage. Actors Varun Dhawan and Nargis Fakhri made brief appearances to promote their new film Main Tera Hero.
