Jaipur Literature Festival to pay homage to Cheb i Sabbah

MUMBAI: Four nights of the four day Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) will be bright and energetic as some of the artistes who play around the globe will perform at Hotel Clarks Amer. The third night will be particularly special as it will see Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz and God's Robots come together to pay homage to the late Cheb i Sabbah.

The DJ, composer and musician who passed away in November 2013m, also mentored the three artists who will pay tribute to him. Cheb i Sabbah was the festival's resident DJ and musical muse for seven years, and is known for combining Asian, Arabian, and African sounds into his compositions. Karsh and the Punditz last performed together for 2002's Asian Massive Tour, which once featured Cheb i Sabbah himself.

On the opening day of the JLF, there will be a performance by Kawa Brass Band, which has quickly established itself internationally. Folk musician and worldwide performer ‘The Kutle Khan Project’ led by Khan will also add to the music element in the JLF, while internationally acclaimed Colleena Shakti and Queen Harish will dance to the tunes played in the desert.

Delhi-based band Ska Vengers will bring to the podium their modern style Jamaican pop music that emerged in the 1950s. There will also be elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap to produce a form of music that is refreshingly different. Gods Robots, a global collaboration between Mumbai-based vocalist ShriiK (Shridevi Keshavan) and San Francisco-based electronic music producer Janaka Selekta (Janaka Atugoda) will light up the stage on 18 January. Taking over the stage in the late evening will be Suhail-Sarangi player.

Also, Algeria will be well represented on the music stage this time with the extraordinary cult nomadic band Tinariwen. The band's fifth album ‘Tassili’ won the award for Best World Music Album at the 54th Grammy Awards.

Tinariwen will close the show on 20 January in collaboration with the great Kiran Ahluwalia, whose jugalbandhi with Tinariwen, Mustt Mustt, won last year's Songlines' Newcomer of the Year award and the World Music Album of the Year. Sonam Kalra and The Sufi Gospel Project will also perform at the festival.
