To be a good lyricist; you need to possess a romantic heart: Irshad Kamil

“Kaagar kaagar morhi itni araj tohse

Oh nadaan parindey

Ghar aaja…”

Two years after its release, the haunting lyrics from ‘Rockstar’ still resonate in the mind, taking us back when the rebellious Jordan, guitar in hand, calls out to a bird to return.

For Irshad Kamil, the film and the memories are doubly sweet- he walked away with the coveted Black Lady- Filmfare award for Best Lyricist. Fast forward to the present: He has done it again, writing for 2013’s surprise hit in the form of ‘Aashqui 2’.

The song of this flick have managed to stay amongst the top 10 slots even after six months of release thus radioandmusic.com profiles the lyricist in this section of rendezvous.

My journey dates back from the narrow lanes of Malerkotla, in Sangrur district, Punjab, the place where I grew up and spent my life studying, doing PHD in Hindi. This is where I even started writing poetries. Punjab is a very colourful place in terms of culture and literature. A person with even a tinge of knowledge of art or poetry will automatically get drawn towards the same. I moved away to Chandigrah and worked in a few plays and that’s where I met my beloved wife, Tasveer.

During my initial days I wrote scripts for a couple of serials and soon followed it, with serials produced and directed by Pankaj Kapur. I was brought to Mumbai by producer Lekh Tandon, and later worked with musician Sandesh Shandilya. And since then life has changed a lot, and obviously I have learnt from each experiences that I have gone through.

Coming to Mumbai I learnt how relationships worked in the city of dreams. Life has changed a lot. On one hand, you have people who try and be friends with selfish motives and once their motto is fulfilled, they just throw you away. You learn not to make friends too easily in life.

Being a typical Virgo I am very selective about my friends. However, my 3 AM friends list include: (filmmaker) Imtiayaz Ali, music directors Pritam, AR Rahaman, Sandesh Shandilya, Salim- Sulaiman and (actor) Pawan Malhotra. I am particularly close to Imtiyaz, Pritam since we started our careers almost at the same time.

My day: if I am not in the studio I would definitely be sitting at home and reading books from my library. My collection of books ranges from psychology to philosophy, to spiritual in Hindi, English and various other languages. Apart from the works Shakespeare, I am an ardent fan of (English poet and satirist) John Donne. These are the poets and the authors who motivate me to raise the bar of success and help me excel in what I write.

I seldom speak about my family since I am a very private person. I have a seven year old son and my wife and Imitiyaz happens to be my best critic. Besides reading, I love sketching and photography. Also I love to write on the psychological issues.

I believe in order to be a good lyricist; you need to possess a romantic heart because love is one such emotion which makes peep in the hearts of the people. For me even if a child has written the word ‘ma’ I would like to know the mental or the sub conscious state of him or her. Ninety- nine per cent of the times I write my songs based on the tune.

Future Plans: I plan to publish my collection of poetry in a year. When it comes to work, I have nothing to complain since I have been working with the best people in the industry. My upcoming projects include, ‘Highway’, the YRF film ‘Gunde’ and Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’.

I am also planning to get into scriptwriting for movies but don’t know when I’ll actually start on it.

In a nutshell, I am a complete family man, who loves life, lives life to the fullest and enjoys the company of my friends.

I would end up by saying......... “Jo bhi main kehna chahu Barbaad kare alphas mere”.
