The Quarter presents Grammy Award winning band Tinariwen for the first time in India, live at The Royal Opera house. Formed in the early 80s, in strikingly unusual circumstances they blend ancient musical traditions with radical contemporary politics.
Tinariwen is a Grammy Award-winning group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. The band was formed in Tamanrasset, Algeria, but returned to Mali after a cease-fire in the 1990s.. The band has collaborated with dozens of reputed musicians like Flea and Josh Klinghoffer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, American singer-songwriter and former lead guitarist of The War on Drugs - Kurt Vile, Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees, composer and the guitarist of Wilco – Nels Cline, guitarist Matthew Sweeney, and Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures. Considered to be “music’s true rebels”, Tinariwen has earned countless accolades and the attention of high-profile fans including Carlos Santana, Thom Yorke, Chris Martin, Robert Plant, Henry Rollins, U2 and Brian Eno.
