Maharashtra has had a rich legacy of devotional literature created by hosts of saint-poets from Dnyaneshwar, Eknath, Tukaram, Namdeo, Chokhamela to Janabai, Muktabai and others. Outwardly, though in praise of Lord Vitthal, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the devotional outpourings of these saints brought about a huge social, cultural and spiritual revolution. Composed in colloquial Marathi, the philosophical fragrance of these songs (abhang) reached millions of hearts, “cleansing” off their shortcomings and turning them into gold. Dhanashree Lele is a Sanskrit scholar specialised in devotional literature. A powerful orator in Marathi and Hindi, she is also an award-winning anchor and interviewer. Aniruddha Joshi and Vidya Karalgikar represent the younger generation of artistes who straddle the worlds of classical, light and film music with equal ease. The evening will feature abhangs of the various above-mentioned saints interspersed with insightful commentary in Marathi.
