Kamal Sabri - 'The sarangi would be heard on radio only when a minister passed away'

Kamal Sabri, son of renowned sarangi legend Ustad Sabri Khan has been reinventing the bowing instrument for quite some years and at the same time, maintaining the rich legacy of the Sania gharana of Moradabad – considered as one of the most important gharanas for sarangi players. Sabri started playing the sarangi when he was five and recorded for radio when he was just nine. Apparently, it was his exposure to radio that pushed him to break the perceptions that surrounded his principle instrument and compelled him to innovate and contemporise.

Plex issue forces radio stations to change marketing plans

MUMBAI: The ongoing producer-multiplex tussle has already had the plexes enforcing new programming strategies to garner revenues through alternate streams. And now the tug-of-war has also compelled a few radio stations to change their marketing activities. Until the commencement of the strike, radio stations were giving away movie tickets of new releases through on-air contests in a bid to attract more listeners. But now with the strike on, a few of them have changed course.

Manna Dey concert to help support Bangalore kids

BANGALORE: Kolkata born Padmabhushan Manna Dey, who turns 90 on 1 May, will perform in Bangalore on 10 May. Through the Memories come alive concert, Dey, who performed in the city in May 2008, will once again take his fans on a musical journey spanning over six decades along with Archana Udupa. Jadavpur University Alumni Foundation, Bangalore will felicitate  him on this occasion. Funds raised from this concert will be used towards its ongoing project of providing educational support to needy kids in and around Bangalore.

Rediff Y&R radio ad makes it to Clio Awards shortlist

MUMBAI: Rediffusion Y&R's advertVandana, for the American India Foundation, is the only Indian entry shortlisted in the Radio category (single entries) for the Clio Awards 2009.Released in September 2008, the ad has been scripted by Mohamed Rizwan. Anisha Sarin and Ashutosh Karkhanis have been credited as the executive creative directors while Ramanuj Shastry and Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar are the national creative directors for the ad. The Clio Awards are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and will be held mid May.

AIR documentary bags award

MUMBAI: 'Sukritham', a documentary broadcast by Thiruvananthapuram All India Radio (AIR), has bagged the award for the best family welfare programme at the national level. In a press release on Monday, AIR's Thiruvananthapuram Station Director said 'Sukritham' narrated the fight of a father and a mother to bring their daughter, born with Down's syndrome, a chromosomal disorder, to the mainstream.

Resul Pookutty takes up Malayalam film

MUMBAI: Oscar winning sound engineer  has for the first time taken up a Malayalam feature film as his next assignment. Mammootty's historical film Pazhassi Raja, directed by director Hariharan,scripted by literary giant M.T. Vasudevan Nair, will mark the Malayalam debut of Pookutty as a sound mixer, say reports. The film will be simultaneously released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi with the same title, and will release on 15 August.
