My Chemical Romance taps Steve Aoki for Welcome To The Black Parade

MUMBAI : Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their iconic album The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance taps Dim Mak label head Steve Aoki to remix their 2006 single ‘Welcome To The Black Parade.’ Keeping the timeless vocals of front man Gerard Way intact, Aoki breathes new life into the emo classic by injecting his signature electro flair in a flawless amalgamation of new-school and old-school. To coincide with the release, Aoki and Way are live-streaming a head-to-head battle in the multiplayer shooting game Overwatch on Twitch, the world’s premier online portal for live gaming. The stream will take place on Aoki’s birthday (30th November), making it a celebration trifecta where the victor will win $10,000 to donate to the charity of his choice.

To this day, My Chemical Romance’s breakout album The Black Parade remains an archetype of millennial rock music. The record, which NME Magazine lauded as ‘The Sgt Pepper of the Emo Generation,’ reached #1 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart in 2006 before receiving a Grammy nomination for its limited edition box set. The LP went on to be certified Platinum and spawned the ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ single, which followed suit by selling over 1,000,000 copies. The track was eventually named one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, among other major accolades.

Steve Aoki, whose sonic roots emanate from punk music, is no stranger to remixing massive rock and roll songs. In August, he released a stellar rework of Blink-182’s ‘Bored to Death’ before performing the track live on MTV’s brand new Wonderland series. He has also worked alongside Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, and Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun. Aoki enjoyed a prolific summer that saw him release his Netflix original documentary I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead and his momentous 4OKI EP, which earned praise from Harper’s Bazaar, The Wall Street Journal and many more. Additionally, his single with Boehm featuring Walk The Moon ‘Back 2 U’ has been streamed over 28M times on spotify. Moreover, Aoki celebrated the 20th Anniversary of his iconic brand Dim Mak by throwing official events in 20 global hotspots over the course of 2016. Turning back the clock to the glory days of emo, he remixes ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ in typical larger-than-life Aoki fashion.
