Jay is a trained singer and started his training at the early age of six. He used to practice tabla for hours and his mother ensured he took his tabla lessons properly.

He has performed with his father over the years and also played tabla for well-known Indian artists. His musical inspiration has been soulful artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevn, Wadali Brothers, Akon, Skylar Gray, and Bruno Mars.
