Tejas Menon releases first EP under own record label

MUMBAI: Singer/songwriter Tejas Menon recently released his first extended play (EP) 'Small Victories’ through his own record label, Kadak Apple Records.

Menon spoke to Radioandmusic.com about his EP and his upcoming projects. Before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in music, Menon was working at Radio One Pune as an RJ for two and a half years. There he started singing and composing his own work; and moved to Mumbai a year and a half ago to completely focus on his music. He has been performing in Mumbai for a while now, and because of the increasing attention he gained, he decided to release his work in the form of an album. Menon stated that, "For me, it is important that people hear my music first and then attend my shows."

'Small Victories’ consists of five tracks that include original work by Menon. Even though, Menon has recorded a few tracks in the past, he opined, "The songs in the EP felt more personal; all the things that have shaped me, my journey and my move to Mumbai. The tracks have also been positioned after strong deliberation to project the theme of 'Small Victories'."

Menon also feels that there are a very few singer/songwriters in the country who have continued to showcase their work without Bollywood influence. To encourage more singer/songwriters to step forward and present their work, Menon along with his partner, Krish Makhija created Kadak Apple Records. Menon also stated that he used his own EP as a debut release of the record label.

The record label is roping in new music artistes. To promote these artistes, the label has started 'Kadak Sessions’ which has these artistes sing acoustic versions of their original compositions. 'Kadak Sessions’ can currently be streamed on YouTube.

"For me, owning the copyright of the music is very important. And, we have excellent artistes for Kadak Sessions like Meera Shanoy and Prateek Kuhad and will get more soon. The label is still in its nascent stage and there is so much more to be done. We are also staring our own podcast series soon," said Menon.

'Small Victories’ is currently available on OK Listen.
