Sukwinder Singh wins National Award for Bismil, Vishal Bhardwaj takes Best Music Direction

MUMBAI: Sukhwinder Singh, famous for the train-top track ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ from the film ‘Dil Se’ has been awarded the National Award for the song ‘Bismil’ from the movie ‘Haider’. The film is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and stars Shahid Kapoor and Shradha Kapoor. The music for the album has been composed by the director himself, who also won the National Award for Best Music Direction and Best Dialogue.

The lyrics for the unique, unconventional song were penned by the legendary lyricist Gulzar, and with Singh’s intense and fiery voice ‘Bismil’ beautifully narrates the story of ‘Haider’.

“It’s an amazing feeling. Vishal Bhardwaj is a fabulous person and a good musician. ‘Bismil’ deserves this appreciation and Gulzar has put in a beautiful soul in the track with his words,” the singer told IANS.

The track ‘Bismil’ marks the point at which the character ‘Haider’, played by Shahid Kapoor, transforms from being conflicted and undecided to committed to the idea of avenging the injustice directed at his father.

The film ‘Haider’ also won the National Award for Best Costume Designe, and was presented to Dolly Ahluwalia. Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut was named Best Actress at the 62nd National Film Awards, while her film 'Queen' bagged the gong for Best Film.
