'Piku' composer Anupam Roy composes music for Sujoy Ghosh's 'Ahalya'

MUMBAI: A multi-talented personality, ‘Piku’ music composer, Anupam Roy is capable of doing more than just creating music, and he has proven that through his latest project ‘Ahalya’. The singer/ songwriter not only composed the music for ‘Kahaani’ director Sujoy Ghosh’s short film, ‘Ahalya’, but also served as dialogue writer for the 14 minute short film.

‘Ahalya’, a thriller, has been inspired by the character ‘Ahalya’ in the ‘Ramayan’. The film features Radhika Apte, Tota Roy Chowdhury and veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee. The background score for the film is composed by Nabarun Bose.

Roy began composing music and writing dialogues for the film in 2014, while working on ‘Piku’. “Sujoyda approached me to create music for ‘Ahalya’ while I was working on ‘Piku’. The dialogues then, were in English, but I suggested they should be changed to Bengali, so I translated them,” said Roy.

Talking about the process of making music for the short film, he said that it was a little different, as the music needed to be perfect and had to be put in the right places. “In one scene, where the inspector is coming into the house, we used Rabindranath Tagore’s song, ‘Esho Esho Amar Ghare Esho’. It can hardly be heard but it was required,” he explained.

Along with the great responses that ‘Piku’ has received, Roy has also been getting a lot of offers for live performances. He recently performed in Singapore, where he sang a mix of Hindi and Bengali tracks, which was followed by a performance in Delhi with famed indie and Bollywood singer- Papon. However, he revealed that these have not been his first live performances. “I have performed live even before I worked for ‘Piku’. But this time, when I performed in Singapore, it was huge. I not only performed to Bengalis or Indians, but also to people from other nationalities. The response was over whelming and I loved every minute on stage,” he reminisced.

Roy, who used to be part of a band which performed regularly at various college festivals, also revealed that he is eager to perform in Mumbai as well.

When asked what else is happening at the moment with him, The ‘Bezubaan’ singer cleared the air that marriage is one thing that is “not” happening right now. He dismissed recent reports that stated he will soon be marrying his “long time sweetheart- Piya”. While he did admit he is in a relationship, he confirmed that there would be no wedding anytime soon.

Apart from his live shows, Roy has also teamed up with ‘Piku’ director Shoojit Sircar, for a few TV commercials.
