Billy Joel to set record with the most performances by any artiste at Madison Square Garden

MUMBAI: Six-time Grammy Award winner Billy Joel will set a record for the most performances by any artiste at Madison Square Garden when he performs his upcoming 65th show scheduled for summer 2015.

The 65-year-old 'Piano Man' singer will surpass the record set by Elton John with a show on 1 July, which will be part of his residency at the New York venue. Joel was announced last year as the first-ever music franchise of Madison Square Garden. The 1 July show will be the 19th performance as a part of the residency, which has included monthly concerts from the legendary singer/songwriter throughout 2014.

Since releasing his first hit song, 'Piano Man' in 1973, Joel has become the sixth best-selling recording artiste and the third best-selling solo artiste in the United States. Joel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2001, Joel received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Last year, Joel received the Kennedy Center Honors by President Obama, the nation's highest honour for influencing American culture through the arts.
