Universal Music promotes Rob Wells to executive board

MUMBAI: Universal Music Group has promoted its global digital business president Rob Wells to serve on its executive board. He will now report to the chairman and chief executive officer of UMG Lucian Grainge. In his new role, Wells will be responsible for the strategic development and execution of UMG's digital business worldwide across its various divisions and around all of UMG's digital assets, including the wireless, online and transactional sectors.

Paris Hilton signs record deal with Cash Money Records

MUMBAI: Socialite and singer Paris Hilton has inked a deal with Cash Money Records, the music label of popular rapper Lil Wayne, to release her second album this year. The record label features a repertoire of hip hop stars like Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Drake amongst others. Earlier this month, Hilton had hinted that she would be working with Cash Money Records sometime soon. Stated to release soon, the album is produced by her ex-boyfriend Afrojack and will feature house music unlike her previous work.

JLo, Lionel Richie join British Summer Time fest lineup

MUMBAI: Popular singers Jennifer Lopez and Lionel Richie have been signed up to culminate the Barclaycard`s British Summer Time festival 2013 on 14 July at Hyde Park, London. The 10 day festival will witness performances by Bon Jovi, who will open the event on 5 July. Elton John was announced as the headliner for 12 July, with performances by Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. Rockers Bon Jovi and the Kaiser Chiefs will play on 5 July, while The Rolling Stones bring in their 50th anniversary celebrations on 6 and 13 July.

Mobile data traffic in India rises by 92 per cent: report

MUMBAI: Owing to the rising consumption of 3G services due to a considerable reduction in the data plans of some operators, the country has witnessed an increase in mobile data traffic by 92 per cent to reach around 25 petabytes in 2012, according to the MBit Index report by Nokia Siemens Network. Mobile data in India nearly doubled in 2012, while 3G data tripled. The 92 per cent increase in mobile data traffic was generated by both 2G and 3G services in India between December 2011 and December 2012.

Red FM Shillong still going strong

MUMBAI: Revenue generation is a major challenge for FM operators in smaller cities like Shillong. Red FM which is a dominant player in the picturesque north eastern city-town has an audience that consumes its entertainment primarily of local music (10 percent), English/ Western music (70 percent) and Bollywood songs (20 percent) along with news and updates. However, with a population of only around 143,007 (2011 census) it does not present a very promising market for major brands or corporates.

Galaxy S4 sets record sales of 10 million in a month

MUMBAI: Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S4 smartphone has got off to a flying start with a record breaking 10 million units shipped in a month. The biggest competitor to the Apple iPhone, is already selling in 60 countries and Korean conglomerate Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker, plans to expand sales to 327 carriers in 155 countries by next month. Solid sales have come even as supply issues have snarled the U.S. rollout through some carriers, reports have said.

Radio One Mumbai issues apology

NEW DELHI: Following objections from listeners, Radio One in Mumbai has made a public apology on its channel for some allegedly ‘sexist comment’ made by comedian Sorabh during a conversation with a radio jockey on 13 May. Initially Radio One station director Naveen Saxena had sent a written apology to the listener, but she insisted that this was not acceptable since the programme had been aired in public. Saxena thereafter agreed to make an apology on the show aired on 21 May.
