Dua Lipa’s Valentino Couture dress brings sparkles to 2020

MUMBAI: When Pierpaolo Piccioli presented Valentino’s dazzling autumn/winter 2020 couture collection in the midst of the pandemic, glittering events were becoming an ever more distant prospect. But despite the absence of awards ceremonies and red carpets from the 2020 calendar, the creative director delivered fantastical gowns guaranteed to turn heads – even remotely.

Look 7 from the show clearly stood out for Dua Lipa, who wore the tasselled sequin gown for her performance on The Graham Norton Show. Unlike the models in Piccioli’s showcase, who were suspended from harnesses that dangled from the ceiling of the Cinecitta Studios in Rome, Dua had her feet firmly on the ground as she performed tracks from her new album, Future Nostalgia.

Dua is famously a fan of sparkle. For her “Levitating” music video, which she launched on TikTok last month, she called upon the team at Versace to “help her disco dream come true”, and together they designed a silver minidress inspired by an archive ’90s style. Back in September, she donned a similarly gleaming dress by Alexandre Vauthier for an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden.

Off stage, the singer adopts a more casual wardrobe comprised of baggy jeans, varsity sweaters and crop tops. Occasionally, she likes to up the ante with a selection of jewels, like her favourite squiggly rings from Bea Bongiasca or diamond clasp designs by Eera.
She no doubt has some killer looks in her arsenal for her highly-anticipated Studio 2054 event, which will see Dua take to the virtual stage alongside FKA Twigs on 27 November. Is more couture on the cards? Time will tell.
