Song 'CAGE' is about experiencing a writer's block: Subhi

MUMBAI: Indo-American Singer-Songwriter 'Subhi' recently released her new video song 'CAGE', a track dedicating to all artists who might have reached a block during the ongoing COVID Lockdown.

In an exclusive interview with Radioandmusic.com Subhi reveals the idea behind the song and gives a glimpse into the making process of the track.

Check below.

Can you brief us about your new song CAGE?

In today’s situation, everyone is in a cage of some sort. For me, Cage is about experiencing a writer's block. I am happiest when I create and I feel caged if I can’t create. As a songwriter there were times when I felt as though my thoughts, ideas, and emotions were blocked in some way. I wrote this song during Fall 2019 and I recorded it in early 2020. All post-production on the audio and video of this song was completed this past month.

How was the experience?

This is the first song that I worked on with a producer. I had already written the song earlier. The cello parts were recorded in a studio in Chicago during early January 2020. I then worked on the track with an LA-based producer and we finished the post-production of the audio in May 2020. Some vocal parts of the songs were to be recorded in May but due to the Pandemic, I couldn’t travel to LA and ended up recording those vocal lines at home. Overall this song had many moving parts and although it was challenging, it was a lot of fun and a great learning experience as well.

What significant message CAGE gives?

Cage talks about being frustrated when you are blocked from doing what you love but the song also celebrates the joy you get once you break free from those limitations. It’s about me wanting to be free with no psychological strings attached, so I can fly and re-discover myself. The song is also about finding new ways to create and free myself.

Amid Coronavirus pandemic how are you spending your quarantine period?

I have been using this time to improve my piano playing skills, reading books, cooking and binge-watching on a lot of the series that were on my bucket list. I am also taking this time to schedule future releases and put a plan together for the rest of the year. This week I have started meditation so I can keep my mind calm and move forward with a positive outlook.

what are your upcoming projects

I have a lot of exciting things coming up this year and next. I recently received a prestigious and highly selective art grant from the City of Chicago to create and release new music this year. My goal is to release one song per month for the rest of the year. I also plan to release my debut English EP in Fall 2020.

Which is the next big collaboration you looking out for?

Yes I am in talks with a singer/songwriter in Mumbai about a possible collaboration. I am also speaking to two producers in LA whom I have not worked with before regarding working on a song together.
