Spin Doctor calls turntablism -'skillful' juggling

MUMBAI: Amidst, DJs, hip hoppers and rappers, there exists turntablists, though a very few in India. Spin Doctor, a name, who has held strong this genre in India for 12 years now, talks exclusively about it.

Commenting on what a ‘turntablist’ is, Spin Doctor says, “Back in the days, when hip hop revolution had happened, DJs used to spin from a record. Turntablism is therefore a skilful juggling, where in I do lot of scratching, re-juggling. It’s not just about playing with buttons, but has a lot of live elements.”

“Turntablism is not done by many DJs in India. It is a very difficult art, which very less people are covering it, but I am happy that I have stuck to it,” he further exclaims.

He further comments on the hip hop scene in India, “It is booming, and growing like anything. Also, Bollywood movie, Gully Boy has helped. Initially, as a hip hop DJ, it was very difficult for us to perform, but now everybody is absorbing this genre.”

Lastly Spin Doctor, who is a doctor by profession reveals, what led to this switch, “I started DJing as a hobby, but didn’t know that I will be so much into it. While studying medicine, our curriculum was very stressful. I wanted to do something in music and aspired to be a rapper, but I was bad at it. Hence, I thought of opting for DJing and then turntablism happened. I keep growing and learning every day about as a turntablist.”

He recently performed at Breezer Vivid Shuffle Season 3 in Mumbai.
