If your aim is to become a versatile playback singer, you should have knowledge of everything, but have your own voice: Amaal Mallik

MUMBAI: Music composer, who hold the credit of being the youngest successful music composer in the country, has revealed the importance of having your original voice and if training is important for being a good singer.

The singer, who is all set to debut as a judge with popular music reality show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs commented on if it is important to be a trained a classical singer for a successful singing career. He said, “Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you can sing in Sur and Taal, it’s ok. But having the knowledge of it is important and you don’t have to sing like a folk singer. If your aim is to become a versatile playback singer, at the end of the day, you should have knowledge of everything, but have your own voice.”

“There are singers in our country, who have come and proved themselves without being heavily classically trained like Atif Aslam, Mustafa Zahir, etc mostly the Pakistani singers influences. There is an only exception of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Saab, who is heavily trained,” he further highlighted.

He further told, “Training is important, no matter, you do carnatix music or Hindustani music, but there are times when over-trained singers come to my studio and they cannot deliver a simple song. So, sometimes training can also jack your voice up. So, it’s important to find a balance that I will take training, but at the same time won’t lose my own style also.”

ON being asked if singing different genres affect quality of voice, “There is no compulsion to sing multi-genres because every singer has his/her range. Every person cannot sing like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, everyone cannot get the grunginess, little romance and huskiness of Arijit Singh. Everyone has a voice, scale and a range.”

“I think singing everyday a little bit is very good because the more you listen to Hindustani, rock, pop, jazz etc. In short, one just has to be fan of good music and listen to it. The more good music, you will listen to, the more good singers, you will get. You will learn a lot from that. Therefore it is important to find out your limitations and within those limitations, you should find your tone and voice moisture, he advised.
