Indian female rapper DEE MC rocks the hip-hop scene

MUMBAI: There are some who break every barrier and make a mark in their respective field. DEE MC is one of them. One of the first female rappers in India, DEE MC, set a benchmark for aspiring girl hip-hoppers. Recently, DEE MC performed for Bacardi Vivid Shuffle and the king of Hip Hop, Raftaar could not stop praising.

DEE MC aka Deepika Unnikrishnan shares, “The hip-hop scene in India emerged long ago at the same time when the internet came in. Very few know the conversation began with text battles. Someone wrote something on Orkut and the other responded in Hip Hop parlance. It all began there.”

DEE MC credits the emergence of Hip Hop in India to the internet, “Thanks to the internet, we learned a lot here. I myself am self-taught and learned most of rapping online.”

Being the first mover in the female hip-hop segment, DEE MC says, she never faced gender inequality, in fact, quite the opposite, “There is a certain surprise element for people and audience that a girl is doing hip hop and they watch my performance with a lot of admiration.”

She is also glad that many girls are now looking up to her for inspiration, “It is a great feeling when girls look up to me.”

What bothers her though is the way Hip Hop is perceived in India, which she thinks is going to change soon. “The way people look at Hip Hop will change soon, once the movie Gully Boy releases. I also have a role to play in the movie and extremely looking forward to it.”

The movie Gully Boy is based on Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy and directed by Zoya Akhtar ad slated to release in 2019.
