'Rangdaari' is not a love song: Arko Mukherjee

MUMBAI: Rangdaari, the latest number from the upcoming Richa Chadha, Rahul Bhat and Aditi Rao Hyadri starrer, Daas Dev is quite a rage among the audience. Written, composed and sung by Bollywood music director Arko Pravo Mukherjee along with Navraj Hans, the song is a visually enthralling treat, whose music has a message.

Shedding light on the idea that led to Rangdari, Arko said, “This song is different from my other songs. Rangdaari is not a love song, but it encompasses the journey of the entire film. It starts with a Punjabi poem, written by poet Munir Miaji, and sung by Navraj Hans. The song portrays the struggles of the protagonist and his redemption from darkness towards light through a colourful palette.”

When asked about his experience of working with director, Sudhir Mishra, Arko said, “I have been a fan of Sudhir’s work long before entering Bollywood. When Sudhir called me for Daas Dev, he told me that he wanted a driving song for the film. And, this is how Rangdaari happened.”

The versatile Bollywood artist, who began his playback singing innings by crooning Saathi Re for Kapoor & Sons, has sung various numbers including the hit, Tere Sang Yaara from the Akshay Kumar starrer, Rustom for which he won the best music director award. Arko, who credits the audience for its success said, “Tere Sang Yaara was my biggest hit after Allah Waariyan. I’m grateful to the audience for its success and thank them for their unprecedented love.”

Further, on being asked about his favourite songs, the music composer listed a few, “If you ask me to pick-up my top three favourite creations, I would pick Allah Waariyan(Yaariyan), Nazam Nazam (Bareilly Ki Barfi) and Abhi Abhi (Jism 2).”

Besides, the music director is also a huge fan of AR Rahman, Pritam, Amaal Malik, Sachin-Jigar, Vishal Bharadwaj and others.

Lastly, for those unaware, Arko is also the first Indian music director to enter the Billboards charts. Speaking about the success of his first international song, Reeva that earned the 45th place on the Billboard Dance Club top 50 charts in 2017, he said, “That song luckily entered Billboards. It was a small audio I had recorded in Los Angeles and forgotten until four months later I learnt about it entering the Billboard list.”

Arko’s upcoming projects include movies like Gold with Akshay Kumar and Satyameva Jayate with John Abraham. Besides, he also has projects with T-Series and Sony Music in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, it is for the first time that Arko has featured in a video composed by him for a film. Rangdaari is being used as the promotional song for the film, a political-romantic drama.
