Storytellers who are not afraid to express our emotions: Awkward Silence

MUMBAI: Mumbai based five boys band Awkward Silence has released a moving song Chlorine. The band defines itself as storytellers who are not afraid to express their emotions. They are highly influenced by The Beatles, Death Cab For Cutie, Phil Collins, Indus Creed, Lucky Ali, Porcupine Tree to name a few.

Their songwriting skills, the ability to tell stories and the dynamic rhythm section makes them unique. The band constantly likes to evolve.

Band member Sidhant explains, “It’s about a middle-aged man who's running away from all his problems. So, he tries to drown himself in a swimming pool. But instead of completely letting himself go, he encounters underwater characters that help him dwell on the toxicity of life.”

Demonetisation introduced the band to digital money which they were not aware of earlier. He said, “It is actually much easier for us to divide payments amongst the five of us. With apps like Paytm etc, it has only made paying for jam rooms, instant transfers of money over long distances and even paying for transport using the various services available easier. Demonetisation did hit us like everyone else in the country but it did help us in this particular way.”

Currently, the band is working on a set list of songs that they can put out on the upcoming EP (some interesting collaborations are also in talks). This is expected to be out by next year. Sidhant shared, “Most of us have other side musical projects. Nishat also plays keys for the band Sooraj and The Shades; Yash plays bass for a progressive rock collective called Disciples of the Old Monk, and Jatin along with Yash play for a pop-rock group called Behind The Music.”
