My music is no nonsense; it's straight up techno: Shaun Moses on his techno tales

MUMBAI: Shaun Moses, the Goa-based producer builds the sound that brings listeners to other dimensions, as he fuses the functionality of techno with the tweak of ambient and weighty bass riffs. Upon beginning his DJ career at 18years of age, he is pushing the electronic sounds dynamically. With 10+ releases on some of the finest labels around the globe, Shaun is now taking the finest tunes of Goan techno of to Europe this summer.

In short, being a good cook, also a caffeine addict, the DJ’ing bug bit Shaun when he was not even over his teens. The cat-lover producer also loves collecting various coffees and fishing in his free time. Shaun landed his first gig at the age of 19 after practising for almost a year at home, at small house parties and watching a lot of his favourite artists. As a child, he was exposed to a variety of flavours in electronic music at his father’s lounge Boutique House Bar in Arpora. With an old pair of CD players and a great dose of perseverance Shaun picked up the skill and started making waves the moment he got recognition.“It’s been no stopping since then. My parents are also music fanatics. It may not be the sound I play, but there’s always been music in my life ever since I was a kid, which I think has been the fuel to my present,” shares Shaun about his early days.

His music is ‘no nonsense, straight up techno’.  According to him, his sound has evolved since last year and it’s much more challenging presently, however, the core of his sound never changes. Tripping on Hollen and Andres Gil at the moment, he said while structuring a track the major point he mostly focuses is his drums. “Drums are the first thing I start on. Once I get the groove, the rest follows easily. I quite enjoy it as this is the same kind of sound I produce and enjoy listening too. I try to get in a few melodies here and there in my set to make it a bit interesting,” sums up Shaun. Talking about his upcoming track ‘Moses Dream’, he told us the track was written by him quite a long time back and it’s much mellower than his current base. “Ironically the track coming out during my upcoming Europe tour which is defiantly a dream comes true. There are days when I like to experiment and try different things and this track was made especially for my early sets when the dance floor was picking up.”

As a producer, Shaun who doesn’t know how to play multiple instruments believes that with a basic understanding of sound, technology, scales and a creative mind, one can do some pretty amazing stuff. Shaun has played on some big stages in India such as Krank and Final Wave by Indivibe, Satellite Beach Festival, A Day of sLick 2x, Ctrl Alt Dance, Sunburn Goa after parties and at a large number popular clubs all across the country. Internationally, he’s carried out successful tours to Russia and Thailand. He has also shared the decks with internationally acclaimed DJs including Samuel Dan, (Pig & Dan) Adana Twins, Djuma Soundsystem, Edouard Von Shaeke, Whyt Noyz, Peter Schumann, Wouter De Moor, Loco & Jam, Dan Booth just to name a few.

This is Shaun’s second six-city tour in Europe after Russia last year but, performances do get him nervous at times. “But then there’s always tequila to help. Two shots usually do the trick,” he put it playfully.
