I am a far better lyricist than singer: Amitabh Bhattacharya

MUMBAI: In an industry where everyone is mapping the success of a song with the number of views it receives on YouTube, lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya likes to go the old school way.

The lyricist waited for personal feedbacks to come his way, to known the success of his latest work ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Bhattacharya has written all the songs of the album. “My gazing of how good a product is from the real world. I rely on text messages, calls, and personal feedbacks. So yes, I did get a lot of text messages in 48 hours from the first song release. A few of my neighbours too walked up to me to congratulate me on my work. Overall the feeling is overwhelming,” says the lyricist who cracked the ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ lyrics in July 2015.

Bhattacharya has always maintained the balance of creating both emotional and off the wall numbers. He has successfully showcased the same in, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ album with ‘The Breakup Song’. “I like keeping it interesting for me, as lyrics writing is a very lonely job. This is why I keep juggling between two balls, sensitive writing and wakda numbers.”

He further adds, “I’ve written lyrics for ‘Udaan’ and ‘Lootera’ at the same time I also have songs like ‘Badtameez Dil’ and ‘Pyaar Ki Pungi’. A lot of writers question the writing of fun songs, but it doesn’t matter to me. I had come to Mumbai to become a singer. I did not know writing but destiny brought me here. This is why I look at myself as a technician first and then a writer. When I am given a situation for a song I simply do my job. I am not looking for garlands on my shoulders.”

Furthermore, Bhattacharya who has sung some successful numbers like, ‘Tera Rasta Chhodun Na’, ‘Iktara’, ‘Paaji Tussi Such a Pussy Cat’ says, that he will not be crooning any songs this year. In fact, he has stopped looking out for singing offers. “I struggled enough in my initial days in the industry, as a singer, but things have changed now. I am a far better lyricist than a singer. I don’t know how far I would have survived as a singer.”

Bhattacharya’s upcoming works are ‘Dangal’ and ‘Jagga Jasoos’
