Bombay Bassment to perform at Glastonbury Festival 2016

MUMBAI: Mumbai-based hip-hop/reggae/funk act ‘Bombay Bassment’ definitely has had an eventful year so far. The four-piece band began its reworked album launch tour in Mumbai on Friday, before heading to Pune on 5 June. Now, as it turns out, the band will perform at the Glastonbury Festival after concluding the five-city album tour.

The four-piece outfit will perform at the prestigious UK-based Glastonbury Festival’s 2016 edition. The five-day festival begins on 22 June and ends on 26 June. However, Bombay Bassment will perform at the Toad Hall on 23 June and 26 June. The two performances will ensure that Bombay Bassment becomes the first Indian hip-hop act to achieve the unique feat.

Mumbai-based artist management agency ‘Mixtape’ had a crucial role to perform for the band’s latest, and possibly the biggest so far, moment of its journey. “The guys at Mixtape asked us whether they wanted to send our work to Glastonbury. And we wondered, what’s the worst that could happen? About a month later, the Festival authorities contacted the agency and the news still sounds unbelievable,” said Bombay Bassment vocalist Bob Omulo.

Omulo explained that the band sent the original album (and not the reworked album – Bombay Bassment x FUNC VIP - that has led to the current tour) and Randolph Correira a.k.a FUNC’s hectic schedule would prevent him from joining the band for the Glastonbury Festival performances. Bombay Bassment will perform with its usual line-up.

The year 2016 has been extremely kind and rewarding to the Indian hip-hop scene. From the growing number of rappers and hip-hop musicians associating with record labels to a successful debut hip-hop-dedicated live gig and the genre receiving exposure on 70mm through mainstream filmmakers, the genre has evolved in more ways than one.
