Anupam Roy: I wish to concentrate more on Bengali projects for now

MUMBAI: After receiving positive responses for his work in the Bollywood film ‘Piku’, singer songwriter and a composer- Anupam Roy, will be turning his attention to the Bengali projects he has in his kitty for a while. For now, Roy will be putting all of his other projects on the backburner.

“I have quite a lot of work that is pending, and for now I cannot think anything beyond the projects I have in hand. I have a band and we are always travelling, so it gets difficult for me to juggle between all the projects. That is why I am not taking up any work now,” said Anupam Roy.

Roy was recently seen at Coke Studio @ MTV donning the role of a composer producer for the track ‘I Wanna Fly’, and singer for the song ‘Moner Manush’. According to the ‘Lamhe Guzar Gaye’ singer, Coke Studio at MTV was Babul Supriyo’s brainchild. Both Roy and Supriyo met in Kolkata and the latter wanted him to do something for International Girl Child Day, and that is how they came up with ‘I Wanna Fly’. The track features Supriyo’s daughter Sharmilee as a singer, and has lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar.

For the next song on Coke Studio, he was asked to compose a track which had a folk element. Roy picked the track- ‘Moner Manush’, which is a traditional Bengali folk song, originally written and composed by the celebrated Lalon Fakir. The lyrics were translated to Hindi by Javed Akhtar. “I got Satyaki Banerjee for the song, which dates back to more than 100 years. The track is romantic, but I reinterpreted it as a song which is based on soul searching. I have also added a few elements of baul music – folk music from Bengal,” he added.

Roy also has a pop rock band The Anupam Roy Band, which will be performing across the city of Kolkata during Durga Puja.
