Daler Mehndi takes PM's cleanliness campaign to the masses with 'Safai Ki Dhun'

MUMBAI: Singer, composer, songwriter, performer, environmentalist and philanthropist Daler Mehndi recently created a ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ anthem to drive home the message of a clean India. The Indian pop musician, who is best known for his hit tracks ‘Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra’, ‘Tunak Tunak’ and ‘Dardi Rab Rab’ amongst others, has written and composed the track ‘Safai Ki Dhun’ to partake in the PM’s ongoing cleanliness campaign.

The singer was approached by the India Today Group for the track, and ‘Safai Ki Dhun’ is what he came up with. Although Mehndi composed the track to the traditional beats of the Pashto, he has kept his trademark peppy and dancy music.

Speaking about his latest track Mehndi said, “I am very happy and excited to be a part of the India Today Safaigiri movement with the ‘Safai Ki Dhun’ anthem. I believe it is every Indian's duty and responsibility to contribute towards keeping our nation clean because if you love your country, you will not dirty it. That is why, when I was offered the project, I took it up. I feel that people accept things faster when it is presented musically. I hope the anthem touches hearts, and becomes the main medium to spread the message across the nation.”

Mehndi revealed that he wrote ‘Safai Ki Dhun’ in about two or three hours, and recorded it in two days. The anthem will be aired on Aaj Tak, leading to the Safaigiri Summit, which will be held on 2 October, 2015. The show will felicitate the winners of the cleanliness drive where those who keep India clean will be nominated by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The singer has taken this drive a step further by deciding to visit local areas and individuals who will be maintaining and cleaning their localities.

Mehndi is quite the activist when it comes to cleanliness and the environment. His wife-Taranpreet admitted that back in 1998, he asked his staff to help him clean up the streets. More recently, the musician also planted over 8, 00,000 saplings in the NCR area of Delhi, and he is currently working on ‘Daler Mehndi Festive Farm’, a project that he initiated three years ago. “I put all my Bollywood work on hold for three years because I was busy working on this,” confessed the artist.

Mehndi has also been working towards providing pure milk products, chicken and plant seeds to one and all. He and his team have been working on 113 acres of land in Gurgoan, where they have around 1200 cows, goats and chicken. His team also maintains a native seed bank of trees and plants. Through the initiative, he aims to provide employment to the locals and provide better quality products to others.
